Lydia Johnson-Oakes passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home in Jacksonville on Monday, June 30, 2025.
Born on September 29, 1945 to Logan and Ruth Ellis Sellers, Lydia was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville. Lydia grew up in a large family, surrounded by many siblings and family was very important to Lydia. She would work for many years in administration for Amaco.
Lydia enjoyed spending her free time being with her family, whether it was hosting parties, camping, or long motorcycle rides with her late husband. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed thrifting for a good deal. She was a longtime member of the Red Hat Society and looked forward to time spent with her friends there. She also enjoyed ceramics in her younger years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Leo, Ander, Buddy, Cooper, Marian, Pearl, Janell, Dorothy Mae, and Elaine; her husband and father of her sons, Steven Johnson in 2003; her husband whom she enjoyed the later years of her life with, David Oakes in 2020; and a son, Tony Johnson.
She leaves behind to cherish years of memories, her sons, Dale (Donna) Johnson of Jacksonville and Charles (DeAnna) Johnson of Lake City; grandchildren, Missy, Anthony, Dalton, and Kayla; a host of great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Starling and Debra Martin; as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.
A celebration to honor Lydia’s life will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2025 in the chapel of Guerry Forbes Funeral Home at 2:00 PM with Rev. Bob Bulmer officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Sellers Cemetery, 12071 Pinebrook Drive South (off Halsema Road N), Jacksonville, Florida 32220.
